Most older adults want to stay in their own homes as long as possible. A safe home — and the right amount of help — makes aging in place realistic. Use this room-by-room checklist on your next visit to Mom or Dad’s house.

Entrances, Hallways & Stairs

  • Sturdy handrails on both sides of every staircase
  • Bright lighting with switches at the top and bottom of stairs
  • No loose rugs, cords or clutter in walkways
  • A sheltered, well-lit entry and a step-free option where possible
  • Ice-melt and a plan for snow removal during Maryland winters

Bathroom

  • Grab bars by the toilet and in the tub or shower
  • Non-slip mats inside and outside the tub
  • A shower chair and handheld shower head
  • A raised toilet seat if standing up is difficult
  • Night-lights between the bedroom and bathroom

Bedroom

  • A bed at a height that makes sitting and standing easy
  • A lamp and phone within reach of the bed
  • A clear path to the door and bathroom
  • A medical alert device worn day and night

Kitchen & Living Areas

  • Everyday items stored between waist and shoulder height
  • Working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
  • Automatic shut-off devices for stoves if memory is a concern
  • A weekly pill organizer and an updated medication list on the fridge
  • Chairs with arms that make standing easier

When Home Modifications Aren’t Enough

A safe house is only half the equation. If your loved one is skipping meals, struggling to bathe, missing medications or has had a fall, it may be time to add support. Options range from a few hours of daily living support to personal care, a home health aide, or nursing at home. Many families find that in-home help is a comfortable alternative to moving to a residential care setting.

Triumph HCSS can review home safety during an in-home assessment for families in Howard County, Baltimore County and Harford County.
